The worlds first artificial satellite was launched into orbit on October 4th, 1957 by the Soviet Union. They called their creation ‘Sputnik’. This fist of its kind orbiter was the size and shape of a beach ball with spikes and marked the start of a new age, the Space Age and of the great Space Race between America and the USSR.
These earrings were born into that time, into the mid-1950s, when the fascination with all things Space was working its way into the design of fashion around the world and of America in particular. Created by H Sterns, a 5th Avenue, New York jeweler who is in business still, this line of jewelry was made to highlight the range of gems that came out of Sterns Brazilian mines. The earrings are set with aquamarines, tourmalines, garnets, citrines and amethysts. The are crafted in 18 karat gold, marked ‘750’, and have post and clip backs. These wonderful earrings measure 19 x 18 mm and weigh 6.5 mm together.
These earrings weren’t called Sputnik when they were designs, but their resemblance to the spiky satelite quickly earned this line of jewelry the nickname, and it has stuck for all these years!
