Mizpah. From the Old Testament, the word is translated to mean ‘watchtower,’ and in the Victorian Era it was used frequently on jewelry and tokens to invoke God’s protection over loved ones.

This brooch is a wonderful example of Mizpah jewelry; perhaps even more cheerful than most! The diagonal swipe of ‘MIZPAH’ across the front center is almost celebratory, and on either side the sweet sentiment quoted above is engraved in a delicate hand. The shape of the brooch is rather like a Pilot’s Wings brooch, with the center round having gentle scalloped edges and the two “wings” on either side adorned with leaves and flowers. This sentimental brooch weighs 1.8 grams and measures approximately 46 mm across and 12 mm north to south. It is hallmarked on back with ‘9CT.’
