From the early 1800s right up through World War I, the residents of England experienced something never before thought possible. With the advent of mechanization and the sustained industrialization of Europe, the living standards of ordinary people increased at unprecedented speed and the English middle class was born.
It was all the jewelry makers in the centers like Birmingham and London could do to keep up with demand for new jewels. Ladies wore daytime jewelry and then switched out for evening jewelry for dinner, and silver was the quintessential daytime metal; they wore it in on the wrist, ears and neck, in elaborately engraved, embossed and over-laid designs. For daywear, earrings, collars and lockets, and silver bangles on both wrists were de-rigueur.
This wonderful example of the Victorian collar and locket was hand crafted in sterling silver in 1890. The chain is super intricate and can be worn with either side up for two different looks. The locket has a fantastic fern and button motif. This locket measures 67 mm north to south and 39 mm across and the chain is 18.25 inches around, a wonderfully long version of the Victorian collar. This set has a wonderful weigh and hand feel, it weighs 77.7 grams all together. It is hallmarked with marks that show it was made in Birmingham, England of sterling silver in 1890 and it also has a makers mark of ‘H.W’.
This wonderful and versatile piece of jewelry can be worn lots of different ways and will be one that you reach for over and over again. Wear the collar with or without the locket and the locket with a simple chain or cord, or wear them together for a look with lots of drama and flair!
