This chain was made to hold a watch. After all, pocket watches were a necessity for almost everyone in the Victorian era and beyond. You couldn’t easily carry one in the trenches, though, and so after World War II the wristwatch really started to come into it’s own, it was more practical, more portable, and quickly eclipsed the pocket watch as the gentleman’s time piece of choice. What then to do with all those unused and unwanted beautiful watch chains? Well, it didn’t take the ladies very long to figure out that they made fantastic necklaces and bracelets, and we’ve been wearing them ever since! Indeed, there really is nothing quite so iconic as the silver watch chain, duplicated by top designers time and time again, this classic is a go-with-anything staple of any well-dressed woman’s jewelry wardrobe. But, why buy a reproduced classic when you can re-cycle a hand made antique original as stunning as this one?
This Edwardian beauty was hand made in England in the early 1910s, it is marked on several different links with different marks, for 1911 and 1913. It’a a substantial beauty, a curb link double Albert with a hefty T bar at the center and a dog clip on either end. The chain is very slightly graduated towards the ends it’s 9 mm wide and at the center it’s 10 mm wide. The chain is 17 inches long and marked as sterling silver, it weighs 76.2 grams. A beautiful chain with its original patina.
