The first sales call I ever went on with my Dad was to an amazing and historied antique jewelry store in Georgetown. The owner was a lovely and extremely well put together older lady who had to take a break from us to take a phone call from a musician who was playing the arena in DC that night, at a sold out show. She spoke in front of us and flirted with him, saying that no, she’d never heard of him, he said Paul McCartney had recommended her shop and she said that Paul was lovely and any friend of his… That woman still looms large in my memory, she knew her stuff. She showed me how to tell a good piece of Scottish jewelry from a run of the mill tourist piece, showed me examples where the stones were so perfect that your finger could barely feel a seam. That wonderful woman is long gone, but she would have loved this fantastic golden brooch, she was all about quality.

This perfectly hand crafted Scottish brooch was most likely made in Scotland in about 1870. The beautiful stones are from different parts of the Scottish coasts, they are perfectly cut and fitted into this gold frame which tests as higher than 10 karat but not as high as 14 karat. The brooch is really nicely made with a great weight and heft, it has a ring on the reverse that could be used for a safety chain or to hang it from a chain. This brooch has no hallmarks and has been acid tested to verify the gold purity, it weighs 29.3 grams.
