This lovely piece is aptly named: Silver Smooth Jensen Pill Box. It was made in 1980 in Birmingham, England, in the Georg Jenson style, which is to say that the design is not ornamental, but lets the object’s material and use speak for itself. After his passing, one of Jensen’s proteges said of the Jensen tradition: “The ornament must never dominate…. It can stress the quietness and simpleness of outline but must never distract from it. …Simplifying and balancing ornament against plain surface is my basic principle.” In that light, this gleaming silver pillbox is the paragon of the style. Its glossy surface and ovoid shape feels curiously satisfying in the palm of your hand. Inside this lovely round box can be hidden an extra pair of earrings, or some homemade lip balm, or (as is originally intended) vitamins and medication. It measures 28.7 mm high by 24 mm wide, and weighs 15.5 grams. Hallmarks on the rim of the bottom half are ’925 S,’ ’1147B,’ ‘F,’ ‘London Zodiac,’ and the maker’s mark ‘Georg Jensen.’
