Three and five stone rings were quite popular in the late Victorian era and their popularity spilled over into Edwardian times. This fantastic turn of the (last) century ring made my heart go pitter-patter when I picked it up at the Portobello Road market early one Saturday morning. The rich, plummy color of the rubies and the sparkling bright diamonds combined to simply dazzle my eyes!
This wonderful 18 karat gold hand made ring features deeply carved scrolling shoulders and elegant lines. The old European cut center diamond measures 4.2 x 3.8 x 2.3 mm deep and weighs about .25 carats, the other two diamonds weigh about .1 carats for a total diamond weight of .45 carats. The two rich red rubies are about .25 carats each for a total weight of .5 carats. The ring is a size 9.5 and could be resized a little bit up or down, it weighs 4.2 grams. It is marked ’18’ indicating gold content, as well as bearing the hallmarks for having been crafted in Chester, England in the year 1909.
